Questionnaires for this race were sent out later than the other races. There are 5 open seats. The 5-person Rent Board Slate of Nicole Drake, Jack Harrison, Judy Shelton, Jesse Townley, & Igor Tregub submitted a combined questionnaire. The other 2 candidates did not turn in a questionnaire.
1) Tell us something about yourself: your background, your history in Berkeley, your political and other activities, anything you feel would be pertinent to your candidacy and our understanding of you as a candidate. The 5 member Progressive Slate for Rent Board is a truly diverse group of dedicated Berkeley progressives. Jack Harrison, the only incumbent on the slate this year, is a lawyer for low income & disabled residents as well as a very active member of the Rent Board. Judy Shelton organized the community to support the union in the Berkeley Honda strike & to support rent control by defeating the odious Prop 98 earlier this year. Igor Tregub is the former Chair of the Labor Commission who also worked against Prop 98 & will continue to organize student, low income, & disabled tenants. Nicole Drake is the co-chair of the Housing Advisory Commission and will expand the Greening of our rental properties. Jesse Townley is the former Chair of the Disaster & Fire Safety Commission & the Secretary of the Berkeley Green Party, and plans to improve seismic safety, tenant preparedness, and expand the Greening of our rental properties. We are proud of our election by almost 200 progressives & tenant rights activists in last month’s Rent Board Convention, which was organized by the Committee to Defend Affordable Housing, the Green Party, the Peace & Freedom Party, and many other local progressive activists. Please support Harrison, Drake, Townley, Tregub, & Shelton for Berkeley Rent Board. Thank you for your consideration. |
