Celebrate the 61st Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Pardon

This year marks the 61st anniversary of the National Thanksgiving Turkey presentation. Though live Thanksgiving turkeys have been presented intermittently to presidents since the Lincoln administration, the current ceremony dates to 1947, when the first National Thanksgiving Turkey was presented to President Harry Truman.

Presidential Transition

The peaceful transfer of power from one Presidential Administration to the next is a hallmark of American democracy. With our Nation at war, our homeland targeted by terrorist adversaries, and our economy facing serious challenges, the Administration is committed to establishing and executing a transition plan that minimizes disruption, maintains continuity, and addresses the major changes in government since the 2000 transition, including the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004, as well as the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, the Director of National Intelligence, and the Homeland Security Council.

Summit on Financial Markets and the World Economy

On October 22, 2008, the President invited the leaders of the Group of 20 countries to a summit in the Washington, D.C. area, on November 15 to discuss financial markets and the global economy. The G-20 finance process, which includes key developed and emerging market countries, was established in 1999, after the last financial crisis with worldwide implications.

President Bush has outlined decisive government action to preserve and sustain America's financial system and economy. This is a pivotal moment for America's economy. Problems that originated in the credit markets – and first showed up in the area of subprime mortgages – have spread throughout our financial system. As a result, the government is acting now to protect our Nation's economic health from serious risk.

President Bush Meets with President Medvedev of Russia at APEC: President Bush on Saturday said, "It's an interesting moment because I've had a lot of meetings with Dmitriy and Vladimir Putin. This will be my last meeting as the sitting President with the leader of Russia. We've had our agreements, we've had our disagreements. I've tried to work hard to make it a cordial relationship, though, so that when we need to work together we can, and when we disagree we're able to do so in a way that is respectful to our two nations."

President Bush Attends APEC CEO Summit 2008: President Bush on Saturday said, "The bonds of unity we felt then remain today, and they will always remain. Long after this crisis has passed, the United States of America will stay engaged in this region. We will continue working with our partners to build an Asia Pacific where people can work and worship and trade in freedom, where children grow up with hope and pursue their dreams, and where thriving, prosperous nations continue to inspire the world."

President Bush Meets with Prime Minister Harper of Canada at APEC: President Bush on Saturday said, "It's been a joy to work with you. And we've accomplished a lot together, relations between the United States and Canada are strong -- sometimes complicated, but nevertheless based on common values. I appreciate your candor, your strength of character and your consistent philosophy. So I'm looking forward to good discussions. I'm looking forward to this APEC -- I think it's very important for us to continue to work together during the time of economic turmoil."

President's Radio Address: In his weekly radio address President Bush said, "This weekend I am in Lima, Peru, meeting with leaders from nations in the Asia Pacific region at our annual summit. This summit comes at a time of serious turmoil in the global economy. It also comes at a time of unprecedented cooperation. A week ago in Washington, I hosted the first in what will be a series of international meetings to address the financial crisis. We reviewed the actions we have taken to manage the crisis. And we agreed on principles and specific actions to modernize our financial structures for the 21st century and help prevent another crisis." En Español
